Reach Local SEO Program Review

We'll start at the end on this one. This is not a company you would use for SEO.

We think ReachLocal has a great solution for the mom & pop size businesses that don't have the budget, structure OR have no concern for their bottom line/what they're spending. You won't find a serious corporation using ReachLocal's services. That being said, they have their target market and no one can knock them for that.

Before we move on, let me break down how we envision ReachLocal's service working. You pay them a monthly fee. Let's say that fee is $1,000. Reach Local creates a basic landing page and sets you up with a toll-free phone number. They sign you up for Super/Yellowpages, set up a Google Adwords account and send paid traffic to your website. That traffic is a combination of your brand (your business name) and some keywords related to your business. After that, you continue paying them per month but your campaign is on a semi-auto-pilot, you pay them, they feed your funds to other places and keep a percentage of it. In other words, they buy something for $1 that you could buy yourself for $1, you just don't know how, so they sell it to you for $3-$4. That's how they make their $$. We cannot verify that this is how they run their business but it's a good guess based on the information we found about their service online.

That being said, it seems none of that has to do with "SEO". For those of you who understand what SEO is, you know everything Reach Local seems to be doing is paid advertising. If you do not understand the structure of a search (free results vs paid results), you need to start
here in your search for an SEO firm. If for some reason that link does not work, please let us know and we will find a new image to help you understand the difference in paid/free ads. The bottom line is that Reach Local is used for a very small business to simply get some advertisements quickly on the internet but will likely not get you listed in the "free" section of Google and that is the section that is clicked on 80% of the time (vs 20% for paid ads).

We pasted in links you MUST read below. Some are from current customers, some are from inactive/past customers of Reach Local. They provide some very good info to help you make a decision.

http://www.ripoffreport.com/internet-marketing-companies/reachlocal-inc/reachlocal-inc-reachlocal-p-d8e34.htm: If you understand the difference between SEO & PPC, this is the best link to read. The customer is being charged twice as much for a keyword he could buy on his own.

http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=14440: In this link, a previous customer breaks down the service provided by Reach Local.

http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/reach-local-c168436.html: In this link, a customer is not happy.

http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/reach-local-c193531.html: In this link, a customer complains that Reach Local is charging $9-$12 for keywords that cost $3 per click. That's exactly what I was trying to explain above. They simply set up a paid account and charge a premium on words that you could buy yourself through Adwords for much, much less.

Any company with lots of customers will have SOME complaints. we found quite a few for Reach Local. However, that's not always a bad thing. Our gut tells me that the customers complaining simply didn't understand what they were signing up for. It takes a REAL SEO/PPC pro to really understand what ReachLocal is selling.
